Marshall Wace names Duchenne UK as their charity of the year

Duchenne UK is delighted to have been chosen by Marshall Wace as their charity of the year and to be awarded a donation of $100,000.

We would like to especially thank Alex Latham for nominating Duchenne UK. Alex, and his wife Justine, whose son Jamie has Duchenne, are brilliant supporters of Duchenne UK. Alex takes part in the Duchenne Dash each year. They are also both members of our Patient Advisory Board.

The donation from Marshall Wace will fund 10 boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy on our Tamoxifen Trial, which is due to start this year.

Tamoxifen has been used to treat breast cancer since the 1980s. It is also used for hormonal disorders in pre-pubescent boys. Preliminary data in the DMD mouse model (Dorchies et al. 2013) demonstrated that Tamoxifen reduced fibrosis, increased the thickness of muscle fibres, and resulted in a delay in disease progression.

If the trial is successful it could give children with Duchenne access to a cheap, effective and readily available treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the very near future.

We are so grateful for the support from Marshall Wace.
