Our journey isn’t easy, but it is fuelled by love – Alex Clarke

Alex Clarke, a father to Ben who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), shares his family’s journey of resilience and hope in support of our 2025 Duchenneber campaign.

DMD has woven itself into every part of our family’s life, changing the rhythm of our days and reshaping our understanding of strength. When Ben was diagnosed, our world shifted in an instant. Yet, through every challenge, Ben has shown us something extraordinary — that joy, courage, and light can thrive even in the face of something so heavy. He continues to be a ray of sunshine wherever he goes, reminding us daily that determination can outshine fear.

Living with DMD means adapting, pushing, and fighting in ways we never imagined. There are moments of uncertainty, and days that feel harder than others, but as a family we rise together. We’ve learned to celebrate even the smallest victories, to find beauty in resilience, and to hold tightly to hope. Ben teaches us that every day is worth fighting for with his laughter, creativity, and love that always deserve the front seat.

We don’t face this journey alone. With the unwavering support of Duchenne UK, we stand stronger. Their relentless commitment to research, advocacy, and accelerating the search for treatments brings real progress within reach. They give families like ours not only guidance and community, but something even more valuable: belief. Belief that breakthroughs are possible. Belief that tomorrow can look different from today. Belief that living with Duchenne can come with possibilities, not just limitations.

Each step we take — every appointment, every challenge, every moment of hope — is part of a bigger fight. And together, with Ben’s spirit leading the way and Duchenne UK at our side, we move closer to the treatments and solutions our children deserve. Our journey isn’t easy, but it is fuelled by love, resilience, and a deep determination to keep pushing forward. For Ben. For every child. For a brighter future.
