Professor Lord Smith of Clifton sits on the All Party Parlimentary Committee for Muscular dystrophy.

A professor of political science, he was knighted for services to Education in 1996 and became a Liberal Democrat working peer in 1997. He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Ulster from 1991 to 1999 and chairman of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust Ltd from 1987 to 1999.
